A family’s story of Respite care at McKenzie

First impressions are important, especially when it comes to choosing an aged care residence for a loved one. They provide an insight into how an aged care home operates and encourage further enquiry.

Karen recalled her first impression of The Terraces when her partner Russel required short term respite care. Karen had heard about McKenzie and The Terraces when her Aunty needed immediate residential care after been discharged from hospital suddenly. She visited the home and was immediately welcomed by attentive reception staff. Karen viewed a range of rooms, was informed about the activity program and loved the overall presentation and feeling of the home.  She felt that “nothing’s too much trouble” at The Terraces.


As the full-time primary carer for her husband, Karen understands the importance of scheduling time to recharge herself mentally and physically. She found that The Terraces provided wonderful respite care for her disabled husband and addressed any concerns immediately.


Karen said that while “the first time in respite is emotional…when you go to a facility repeatedly and know as a carer your partner is happy to go there for respite, it takes away the worry”. She expressed delight that “the staff have an amazing ability to remember respite residents from one visit to the next”. The enjoyable social activities in quality surroundings as well as helpful staff, willing to assist in any way, were very reassuring to her and Russel.


These rewarding respite visits have led Karen to choose The Terraces for permanent care for Russel when he requires it. Karen has also decided that it will be the first choice for her too.
